Petrified Wood slabs for sale.
Mark is frequently asked: Why are polished petrified wood slabs so expensive?
Answer: Less than 20% of the petrified wood that Mark has is solid enough to slab. The larger the slab the rarer it is. Mark uses large expensive equipment to find the buried wood and to dig it out, big trucks to transport it, it must be cleaned and stored (protected from the snow or freezing rain). He built a special saw to precision cut it and he polishes it to a mirror finish. Not to mention this fossilized wood is rare and extinct.

We have over 200, 15 million year old, big fossilized logs from the Northwest and older pieces from the Southwest. If we could slab it all, we could cover approx. 30,000 sq. ft. of floor. Some of the wood will make great decorator pieces, while others make good landscape pieces, however, only a small percentage are fracture free enough to slab. These slabs of petrified wood cut and polished make an excellent alternative to the every day table top. Yes, it's a bit more costly to make a piece furniture out of petrified wood, but these pieces are truly original..
The natural wood colors are in warm earthy tones. From the softest ivories to the palest creams, deep ebonies, rich shades of golden honey and deep mocha browns. Petrified wood never appears as one solid color. The color tones vary and veins or bands of contrasting color run throughout the slices. No two slices are alike.
Petrified wood also varies in hardness, density, and porosity. Some slabs are harder than others.
We carefully select the petrified wood to cut into tile like pieces. Slabs can come in slices 1/2 inch to 4 inches in thickness or can be custom cut to the thickness the client needs.
Petrified wood provides unique patterns along with a high quality surface.
Package it all with an artistic furniture maker and you have something really unique or just use them as the dining room trivet or may-be put on a desk top stand to be an office conversation piece.
Mark is in the process of creating a large sellection of slabs in various shapes, sizes and from various stones leaving the beautiful matix of the bark on the slabs, as this is a large part of its natural beauty. It takes time to slab these petrified logs. Mark waits until an order is placed and then we give an approximate time for delivery..

We have found some interesting information from an "Annual Report Smithsonian Institute circa 1921 page 598 (read more)that briefly describes how the Hopi used petrified wood as the icon for man during certain spiritual rites. Another resouce is "Fossil legends of the first Americans" By Adrienne Mayor (read more). In these few paragraphs she describes findings of petrified fossils and their uses amongst the Native Americans and how their beliefs fall in line with the late scientists beliefs that the center of our continent was infact shallow sea and the Hopis lived on the beaches of this vast inland salt water expanse.
