Petrified Wood adds a true "green" prehistoric charm to your home or yard. It is some times easy to forget that although this looks like wood, it weighs as much as a boulder and lasts just as long.
In the Northwest these “trees of stone” are believed to have come from the Miocene Period of about 15 million years ago. This period produced large areas of swamps and shallow lakes that were surrounded by heavy forestation. Much of the petrified wood found today in this region are deciduous trees such as Sycamore, Oak, Walnut, Maple, Ginko and Buckeye. Even though there were also Douglas Fir, Spruce and Hemlock growing on the higher elevation, they were further from the moist areas and less likely to be found in abundance unless they were transported by land slides and mud flows. (Check out this link to the Gingko National Forest website. In the Yakima areas, petrified wood is found accompanied by volcanic ash and lava. These very unique and perfect fossilized plants are found buried deep below the surface here is the Northwest and they tell us their historical lineage millions of years ago before any of man's by products polluted our planet. There are many theories of how, why and when these periods ended, but there is no unified theory that we are aware of.

Four Feet Long
This log is a sitting log. This magnificent piece is white washed from a millinium of hard water washing over it and it has stones embedded in the sides of the petrified log. Many of our logs look just like drift wood and make exception entrance pieces to a landscape or may-be a piece to watch the Sunset from. It's smooth, big enough for a couple to sit on comfortably for hours.
I have not saved the measurements on this piece, it's been in our yard as a bench. We live across from a park and we watch the kid's soccer games every Thurs.

Almost 4 feet Long
This smooth surfaced log looks like another drift wood log found on the Oregon shoreline. It's the perfect size to sit on. Weighs over 500 pounds. this is an excellent log for slabbing. It looks to have great integrity and the logs from this area frequently have gold veins in them.

This is an amazing fossilized stump. I looks like it was sitting comfortably on the ground for 50 years and "Bam", it was knock into the swampy mud and 15 million years later we dig it up. Except now with all the silica sediment that Mother Nature added, it weighs over 500 pounds.
