Utah Petrified Wood
10" x 8" x 2" thick end piece
It's really rare to find a nice piece like this along the Hwy 89 corridor. I figured it would be a snap to find something great near Zion but that's not the case. After checking with the local rock shops and long time collectors, it seems that there isn't much petrified wood found locally that isn't just black on the outside and inside. This piece was found about a quarter mile from the rock collectors home.
This rock collector has the best collection of petrified wood and other semi-prescious stones in southern Utah. He and his wife are located just about a mile north of Orderville, Ut. on the left hand side of the road. Don't speed, they got a radar trap at the south end of town.
Now with that said; I did not check out Brice Natl. Park area and it seems there is a rock shop in Escalante that has a nice collection. Here's a link, click here.
Below is a really interesting piece. It looks to have been bitten into by a rather large prehistoric vegan. It is considered correct that there were no axes 15 million years ago. So, one might guess that this part of the tree might also be a bit large and branchy to be eaten, but may-be the cleaver Vegan just chomped the branch off so it could eat the fine leaves it couldn't reach at the end of the branch. You can see more of this piece and others in our "Unique Ideas" section.

We do our best to give out all the free information we can on good petrified wood buys, how to make your petrified wood more valueable and show some of the interesting facts surrounding the creation of the many petrified forests we enjoy today.
Below we have this interesting fossilized log that has been buried away from the four seasons and beneath the biological activity so that it still looks very much like it did when the tree was lying in the forest with green ferns growing around it. We think this log was caught up in a landslide and ended deep enough in a slough, that it was with out oxigen and hense petrified. This petrified wood specimen and many other rare pieces were found while excavating 100 feet or 10 stories below ground level. All of this petrified wood comes from privately owned land. Undoubtedly many of his pieces were washed into Oregon and Washington via the Great Missoula Flood.
This ultimate piece of "landscaping art" is about 8ft. long (2.4 meters) and weighs about a ton.
See more of this log in our "Large Logs" section. We do admit that the light red on the closest part and the blues on the back are some lighting effects we added to this log for this particular photo. It sort of shows how this log can make a great addition to the interior of one's home and it is so hard that the kids can run on it all day long and they won't hurt it (well, may-be not all day long). When it is tapped on, it sounds like a piece of fine bone china and not the thud you'ld expect from an old wood log.
Above is the first of many "End Table" or "Wine Table" ideas created our artist Tim, who is located on the famous "Red Wood Hwy" in Northern California. The table itself is made from large redwood driftwood found on the shores in Humboldt County and it is sand blasted, cut and assembled before it is again sanded and finish oiled. This piece is currently photographed raw, meaning it has no oil on it yet, so the redwood does not really show in its natural colors. You can see more of the end table ideas in the "Table Tops" section.
